Who Might Benefit From Weight Loss Injections?

Weight loss injection therapy is indicated for a BMI of 30 or higher. Individuals with a BMI of 25-29.9 may be a candidate if they have obesity related conditions such as high cholesterol, hypertension, Thyroid conditions etc. Labs will be required.

How Does Weight Loss Injection Therapy Work?

This weekly injection is a Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonist. Historically, these types of medications have been used to treat Type II Diabetes. Clinical trials have shown that adults taking Semaglutide lost an average of almost 15% of their initial body weight and was then FDA approved as a weight loss injection.  Since 2021, GLP-1 agonists have been used to treat obesity. It is not clear how the drug leads to weight loss, but health care professionals know that GLP-1 agonists help curb hunger, slow the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestines resulting in feeling full faster and longer. Therefore, you eat less resulting in weight loss.

On average, patients are seeing 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week. Individuals who use the injection along with modifying their lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise, can see an increase in their overall weight loss results.

What Are The Common Side Effects?

The most common side effects from using this medication are nausea, constipation, and vomiting. It is important to stay hydrated, lower the amount of alcohol you consume and chose to eat smaller more frequent meals.
